Fast and Furious 8 review

What I liked: This is the first Fast and Furious movie I have seen but I have watched a number of the trailers. They always teemed with absurdity. Now instead of a 3 minute trailer, I got to sit through an hour and a half of turbo powered sports cars saving the world. As you can imagine the list of things to like is quite long. The movie starts off strong with a car race in Havanah (I guess that US-Cuban relations are going really well if a FBI agent is having his honeymoon there). The reason for the car race was a bit complicated but essentially the main dude was trying to win back his cousin's car. In the course of the race he manages to light it on fire, explode it, and launch it into the ocean. But at least he won it back. I'm sure his cousin was very grateful. I also find it noteworthy that the race was 1 mile long and took 11 minutes to complete. The moral of this story is that while both racers are excellent at theatrics, they take safety seriously. Geostorm Review

-submitted by Mrs. Winston What I liked: Massive destruction. There's no logical reason you'd have to cause ice storms in hot places and tidal waves in dry places, but it looked pretty awesome. For once, the bad guy's plan was pretty good. I kept trying to poke holes in it, but there was an answer for every question I had. I'm now considering taking over the world myself with massive natural disasters. The good guys, on the other hand, seriously need to rework their plans. Why didn't it occur to them that a satellite communication might not be secure just because no one else happens to be standing in the room? Why would you put Gladiator in charge of an engineering project? Why do you need to reset the system manually? Why do they even have a self-destruct option? In the genre of disaster films, this is one of my favorites. Not quite Independence Day, but way, way above 2012. The characters were engaging, the badguys were scary, and saving of the world was a re

Thor 3 Ragnarok Review

-submitted by Mrs Winston What I liked: Bad haircuts. Willy Wonka music. Revolutions short on pamphlets. Matt Damon. Helmet braids. Executioners of visions. Kids playing with snakes. Prisoners who have jobs. The strongest Avenger. Or Revengers. The movie was hilarious. Much more along the lines of the lightness of Antman and Guardians of the Galaxy than the earlier, more serious Marvel stories. The franchise has matured far enough that it can mock itself and still be cohesive And I liked the family dynamics getting worked out on an epic scale. There is also lots of satisfying fighting and destruction, as you'd expect from a movie with Thor in it.  What I didn't: Talking Hulk. He was much more eloquent than you'd expect. Malificent's wardrobe. Did not need to make another appearance, and definitely not with skintight leather.   Who should watch this? Everyone who loves the Avengers. Anyone who has either recently watched Thor 2 and Avengers 2 or who has a ru
