Super 8 Review

What I liked: The movie the kids were working on was entertaining and I was impressed with their stage makeup fake blood and all. Many of the characters seem familiar. Maybe they are just classic tropes, but I like to think that some BYU student watched this movie and thought, hm I could work with this and spun it out into Granite Flats. The plots aren’t that similar but there are elements that made me think that it could be a piece of the puzzle. What I didn’t: If we were riding along and my friend got stolen from the car by a lion, I would never assume that I could go rescue them two days later. Why would anyone assume this of a friend stolen by a monster the size of a house. This is clearly a poorly conceived plan. In the words of Muppet Treasure Island “He’s dead Jim” I am also unsatisfied with their method of selecting who they would like to rescue. Also I am unconvinced that anyone, including special aliens, could turn your standard water tower into a super selective el

Bernie Review

What I liked: A recommendation from Sarah and Patrick. Definitely quirky. However shockingly while it stars Jack Black he is not the weirdest character in the film. I had no idea that he could sing, he is actually quite good. The film is set up as a documentary about a mortician who lives in a town of almost entirely really old people. It follows what happens to him. I won’t tell you what does happen though apparently it is “based on a true story.” It is fun in the same sort of way that Waking Ned Divine is funny, there are a bunch of weird people in a tiny little town, in a very odd situation, then you throw a touch of “the Office” interviews on top. If Hitchcock had made this film it would have had a very different feel. I do like that the two podunk towns that pretty much look exactly the same spend a lot of time insulting the other. What I didn’t: Well it is super quirky and kind of slow. As always I am left to wonder when the say “based on a true story” just how much of

Ninja Turtles Reveiw

What I liked: Allow me to begin by noting I watched the movie starting about 1 am. That may have impacted my watching experience. I liked the opening credits. I thought they were 1 kind of cool like the books in elementary school with pictures that were photographs of collages. 2 It seemed like a fun homage to comic books. 3 There weren’t actually pictures of turtles. I liked shredder’s suit. When it comes to giant robotic samurai battle suits, this one wins. Granted the only other one I have seen was in a wolverine movie, but still. It had many good features: magnetic throwing knives so you can throw them again and again and again. Millions of spikes. What are they there for? No one knows. Is there a reason that 5 million swords are better than just one or three or 75? Don’t be ridiculous, plus when you order that many you get bulk discounts. They did a surprisingly good job of keeping the reporter girl in the movie given that she has no super powers, cannot be a love interest
