Wrinkle in Time Review

What I liked: I liked Charles Wallace, that kid was funny. I liked that the ladies in crazy dresses were warriors and that the kids were warriors too. You know me I'm all about a good action movie with awesome fighting, but I liked that at least in this universe the defining characteristics of warriors were compassion, kindness, and love. Similarly, I liked that the bad guys weren't launching a massive military conquest of the universe, I mean everyone is doing that these days. Surprisingly, I liked the Mrs's dresses. They were crazy and over the top but it was fun that they changed with every teleportation and that they were completely absurd. The outfits were rather like the Mrs's wearing them, over the top and fantastical. Knowing all of them from other shows I may have had some unfulfilled expectations. At no point did anyone say "You get a wrinkle, and you get a wrinkle, Everyone gets a wrinkle!" which I must admit was a little disappointing. I also think they could have worked it in through the one who just quotes other people. Most of her quotes were funny. I liked the flashbacks of the Mom and Dad. I liked the challenges they encountered in the creepy evil world. And especially liked doing physics in a tornado, it reminded me a lot of the opening to the most terrible of the Indiana Jones movies.

What I didn't: The visuals of teleporting, it seemed like a cheap haunted house. The flying cabbage carpet. If you are going to create a fantastical vegetable based flying creature, why would you choose cabbage as your inspiration? Oprah's character should have gotten a better of variety of costumes. She changed costumes with every landscape but they were pretty much all the same, someone should have given here some different colors and textures. It's like someone thought the rhinestones filled her cool outfit quota. I'm confused about the whole teleporting thing. Sometimes Meg hijacks the teleport with all the people and takes them to a different place, sometimes she goes nowhere, sometimes they forget to bring the friend and he ends up there anyway. It just seems remarkably inconsistent. The Happy Medium. In his own words "you don't want to end up like me with a weird beard living in a cave." Yes happy medium, you should probably change your life.

Who should watch this? I was a bit outside the target audience, this is probably best for middle and high schoolers. It may be a bit scary for elementary and it felt a little bit episodic for me.

Would I watch it again? It was fun to see, I doubt I'll rewatch it.

    I hope when you say "the opening to the most terrible of the Indiana Jones movies" you are not referring to Harrison Ford in a refrigerator at a nuclear test site. In that case, you must me, "the most incredible opening to the ultimate Indiana Jones movie."

      Excellent opening scene. Most terrible of the Indiana Joneses. But still better than than the late installments of Pirates and than some of the Star Wars prequels.

What I liked: Liked is definitely the wrong word for it but the scenes of the sinking of the Titanic were masterful. They were technologically impressive, apparently remarkably accurate, and emotionally gripping. The variety of ways in which different people dealt with a completely hopeless situation was both touching and thought provoking. Especially beautiful was the string quartet. In isolation from the love story, the sinking of the Titanic is a tragic reminder of the cost of hubris and the necessity of regulating emergency procedures and capacities. Free Guy

What I liked: I liked Guy. That is in fact the point but I like how happy, carefree, and wholesome he is in what is essentially Grand Theft Auto. I like what the NPCs decide to focus on as they achieve consciousness. I liked the ridiculous YouTubers getting all philosophical about Guy and how he radically changed game play. I liked that so much of the game economy was about silly skins, just like a real game, and how that completely confused the NPCs. I liked the fight between Dude and Guy and its resolution, it managed to stay very on theme. The item cameos were fun, like seeing the Portal gun, or the Fortnite piñata. I liked guy finding the med kit and building up an inventory.  What I didn't: I am not be a lawyer but I am suspicious that there maybe more efficient ways of obtaining evidence of copyright violation than playing 12 hours of a computer game every day. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Reveiw

What I liked: For a movie based on what is in essence a fictional encyclopedia, this movie has a surprising amount of plot. Not great plot, but more than I usually get from reading an alphabetical reference book. I liked the dopey sidekick, his facial expressions were great and he was the only one who acknowledged that what happening on screen was not actually normal. I liked that the president led the tiny army of US wizards to their tiny battle in a subway. So as military victories go, this was not one for the history books, for many reasons. But it did lend more meaning to the phrase Commander in Chief. I felt like Dr Who was once again a bow tie wearing socially awkward guy who lives in a box that is bigger on the inside. Some of the creatures were cool but the CGI didn't quite make them alive.
