Incredibles 2 Review

What I liked: Jack Jack. Edna Mode. Jack Jack and Edna Mode. Pretty much anytime one or both of those characters are on screen it is awesome. I liked the interdimensional baby monitor and the motorcycle, I can't say it looked comfortable but it was pretty cool. Stretchy superheroes have never been my favorite. I don't know of anyone when we play the "what super power would you have?" game who says they want to be super stretchy. But given that, Elastagirl does an admirable job at bad guy beating. It was fun to have the theme songs in the credits. The Incredobile was fun. 2018 has been a good year for raccoons on the silver screen. There were raccoons in quiet place. A raccoon features in the most recent Avengers film. Now we have a show stealing raccoon in Incredibles. I'm not sure if I should tell the talented raccoons I know to send in audition tapes or encourage them to go to community college because the industry is saturated.

What I didn't: Ok, we need to talk about the short. The dumpling baby was cute. It was a little weird. And then out of nowhere it takes a startling turn. Yes, it resolved, but I'm really confused. Also it made me deeply concerned about the Incredibles eating Chinese takeout at the beginning of their movie. Did no one think about that? I would have liked more funny Frozone moments. I also feel like there were far more TV's and monitor screens than there should have been in the early 60's. I doubt helicopters even had any then. Do helicopters have little TV screens now? The plan was not really terrible, just predictable. Did no one notice the goggles?! Seriously people. I had higher hopes for the international superheroes. I know most of them were fledgling heroes but Void definitely could have been more useful. I'm also concerned about the aerodynamics of the airplane, if I remember my high school physics, those wings should make it fly strait down right?

Who should watch this? It's targeted more to the parents of small children than to the small children.

Would I watch it again? Yes.

The Titanic

What I liked: Liked is definitely the wrong word for it but the scenes of the sinking of the Titanic were masterful. They were technologically impressive, apparently remarkably accurate, and emotionally gripping. The variety of ways in which different people dealt with a completely hopeless situation was both touching and thought provoking. Especially beautiful was the string quartet. In isolation from the love story, the sinking of the Titanic is a tragic reminder of the cost of hubris and the necessity of regulating emergency procedures and capacities. It carries similar gravitas as a war film. At the 25th anniversary of the film, I can appreciate how Titanic has impacted movies made later.  What I didn't: So here's the thing. I feel very bad for you if you died in the sinking of the Titanic. I feel less bad for you if you managed to get on a lifeboat on the Titanic and then decided to get off. I question all of your decision making and priorities if you decide to get off a...

Annihilation

What I liked: I liked the crystal trees and the creepy people plants. The multi colored lichen and flowers were cool too. I liked how disorienting the loss of time and flashbacks were, they did a good job of maintaining the disquiet and suspense. I liked that they remembered that mutation and evolution has no goal, it's just a thing that happens with all kinds of side effects. I liked their little boat trip in giant crocodile infested swamp. I'm not sure if I loved the silver skin suit but I can't deny that it was interesting.  What I didn't: The heroes are all scientists who go on a mission to find out what is going on inside the "shimmer". For being all scientists they don't draw very well on their test one variable at a time training. If nothing has ever come out of the shimmer, try sticking a stick in and see if you can pull it out. Step inside with a harness on so if you don't come back they can try and pull you back. Walk in a little ways and t...

Free Guy

What I liked: I liked Guy. That is in fact the point but I like how happy, carefree, and wholesome he is in what is essentially Grand Theft Auto. I like what the NPCs decide to focus on as they achieve consciousness. I liked the ridiculous YouTubers getting all philosophical about Guy and how he radically changed game play. I liked that so much of the game economy was about silly skins, just like a real game, and how that completely confused the NPCs. I liked the fight between Dude and Guy and its resolution, it managed to stay very on theme. The item cameos were fun, like seeing the Portal gun, or the Fortnite piƱata. I liked guy finding the med kit and building up an inventory.  What I didn't: I am not be a lawyer but I am suspicious that there maybe more efficient ways of obtaining evidence of copyright violation than playing 12 hours of a computer game every day. With that in mind I think the evidence points to the heroine enjoying the game far more than she lets on. On the top...
