Edge of Tomorrow Review

What I liked: It was an original idea. Or at least an original meld of Groundhog Day, Halo, and Ender’s Game. It was a fun action flick. I also thought that Cruise did a convincing job portraying a cowardly skunk who transforms into an effective warrior. And there were some parts that made me laugh.

What I didn’t: Still not sure what happened there at the end. Also what exactly are those aliens? I know the scientist said they were perfectly evolved but they really just looked like toothy tumbleweeds to me. Why do they even have that lever? Also it does seem like if you’re teamed up with the world’s best soldier you might be able to pull some strings like to not land on the beach for example.

Who should watch this: It was a good action flick. Anyone who likes those

Would I watch it again? Sure.

The Titanic

What I liked: Liked is definitely the wrong word for it but the scenes of the sinking of the Titanic were masterful. They were technologically impressive, apparently remarkably accurate, and emotionally gripping. The variety of ways in which different people dealt with a completely hopeless situation was both touching and thought provoking. Especially beautiful was the string quartet. In isolation from the love story, the sinking of the Titanic is a tragic reminder of the cost of hubris and the necessity of regulating emergency procedures and capacities. It carries similar gravitas as a war film. At the 25th anniversary of the film, I can appreciate how Titanic has impacted movies made later. What I didn't: So here's the thing. I feel very bad for you if you died in the sinking of the Titanic. I feel less bad for you if you managed to get on a lifeboat on the Titanic and then decided to get off. Magnificent 7 Review

What I liked: All the gun slingers are ridiculous larger than life characters. Most of them were pretty fun and I think the actors probably had fun with the parts. And despite them all being ridiculous, I was pretty sold on the idea that if you wanted to raise a tiny mercenary army in the old west, this is probably about what you would come up with. For having a large number of principle characters and little time to spend on each of them, they did a good job of giving them personalities and interesting guessed at backstories. I liked the traps the good guys set and the explosions. The comic timing was pretty on point. It felt like an old western. Granted I haven't seen that many: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Shoot out at the OK Corral, Man from Snowy River (yes I know that one is Australian but I need to pad my numbers), Rango (too far?). Captain Phillips Review

What I liked: I liked the suspense, I liked the acting, I liked that I got to watch it. I liked that the captain was really good and took care of his crew. The pirates were terrifying but I also liked that the movie made them more than just scary, it worked for me more than the little bit of scene of the captain getting dropped off to go to the boat in the beginning. I thought they did a good job of conveying the Captain's shock at the end. I was glad when I looked up the main pirate actor and found that he was not actually as malnourished and terrifying as he looked in the movie. What I didn't: I am concerned about the boats fighting pirates with water cannons. I also am not sure what the crew's plan was if they caught up with the pirates' boat. The pirates weren't that clever, at the latest when the navy seals got on the radio the pirates should have known something was up.
