What I liked: This is in essence a 3 hour long curtain call for the Avengers. I happen to have liked the last 11 years of superhero movies, so I liked revisiting that world. The small fight scenes were mostly fun and the epic fight scenes were satisfyingly epic. We got all the catch phrases we wanted and in mostly entertaining circumstances. I enjoyed zen Hulk and as always the Hulk smash. I was surprised to learn that fixing your hair by lightning turns out better than I thought it would. It didn't look great mind you, but much better than anticipated. That thing we've been waiting for finally happened and it was awesome. The powers were still not balanced or consistent but I was glad that some of the characters that I was very disappointed in before got to have much better power displays. Also stairs, cheeze-whiz, and "it was him or a tree."
What I didn't: Lord of the Rings gets a bad rap for having about 85 endings that took up the last hour of the movie. Endgame has a similar situation: it has about 85 beginnings. Most of these beginnings serve the sole purpose of reminding us that everyone is sad. I feel like anyone who has seen Infinity War will remember that everyone is sad and why everyone is sad. If you haven't seen Infinity War, first I don't know why you decided to jump strait to Endgame, second you will still be confused about what is going on despite the 85 beginnings that all remind you that everyone is sad. Given the general sadness and the curtain call purpose of the movie, this Avengers was less jubilant than the others. If I had to summarize it, I would say it was more epic and less fun. On the note of confusion, with their effort to maintain relative normalcy on Earth, the Avengers really should have launched a major information campaign because clearly everyone was going to be confused by the events of Infinity War and I am betting that the results of Endgame are equally confusing for the general public. I am curious why traveling by magical portal takes so long. This movie reminds us of at least one of the major downsides of being a cyborg. Mostly, don't be a cyborg, it doesn't make for a happy life. I'm sure the Terminator would agree. Who was guarding the soul stone before the Red Skull? Is that job even really necessary? Finally, we have all seen Guardians of the Galaxy, we know you can spread out the destructive power of infinity stones by holding hands. There should have been more hand holding in Endgame.
Who should watch this? People who have enjoyed the last 10 years of Marvel movies.
Would I watch it again? Probably, yes.
